Geocaching Fun for Your Family
Everyone appreciates discovering things or finding treasure. But did you know you may have "treasure" all around you in the form of geocaches? Yes, it's true! There are literally tens of thousands of geocaches hidden away all over the Unites States and Canada (and around the world, actually). Many people have heard the term 'GPS' or 'Geocaching' before, but may not know what they mean. GPS is short for Global Positioning System, which is a device that triangulates your position via satellites orbiting Earth. They are freely available to use, but you do need to have a GPS unit to receive their signal. A geocache is typically a container and a log book. Normally you'll find a plastic container, ammo box, or bucket filled with goodies, or smaller container ("micro cache") too small to contain items except for a log book. The coordinates listed on this traditional type of cache page are the exact location for the cache. There are many types of geocaches, so there is no shortage of fun and creativity to be found. Most geocaches are created by people like you and me. The geocaches coordinates are normally available on the internet at such places as geocaching.com. The first thing to do is to research the best geocaching GPS devices for your geocaching adventures. Fortunately, you can find really good GPS units designed for geocaching for around $100. Then you would learn how to use the device and their are plenty of good resources to do just that. Next, you find some local geocaches via the internet, load them to your GPS device and start your adventure. It's that simple! A few things to bring along and remember, especially with kids: Select the caches carefully. Not all caches are best when it comes to bringing kids along. Start with an easier geocache. Preferably a geocache that is hidden in a larger ,easier to find container. Some geocaches are even hidden BY children FOR children. This is good, because the cache will likely be at the kids eye-level. Be prepared. Things to bring include: a small First Aid kit with band aids, Neosporin and other common necessities for cuts and scrapes. A small backpack or an easy to carry bag with water, nutritional bars, a notebook, a toy to put into the geocache, if you take one out, and bug spray. Also, one of the best times to go is in the autumn, as there are less insects. But this depends on where you live. You can even bring your GPS device along on roadtrips and go geocaching along the way. It really breaks up the driving and gives the kids something to look forward to! Don't forget your GPS device either. Now go out and have fun!! |
